Solomon was a Scientist
Many people don’t realize that Solomon was a scientist. The Bible clearly states that he had profound knowledge of the natural world: He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the wall. He spoke also of beasts, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of fish. (1 Kings 4:33 ESV).
Solomon studied plant life, animals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
This was science an exploration of God’s creation to understand its workings and purpose.
Breaking the False Divide Between the Spiritual and the Secular
There’s a common misconception within the body of Christ that God is only concerned with biblical or spiritual matters.
This false belief, rooted in religion rather than truth, limits God’s capability in our lives.
The reality is, God is more than capable of teaching us everything we need for both our spiritual journey and our secular endeavors.
Consider the case of Bezalel in Exodus 31:2, where God Himself filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze.
This was not just spiritual wisdom but practical, skill-based knowledge given directly by God.
The Holy Spirit Teaches All Things
When Jesus ascended, He promised us the Holy Spirit, saying, But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you (John 14:26 ESV).
Notice that Jesus said the Holy Spirit would teach you all things. Not just spiritual truths, but everything you need to fulfill your purpose on earth.
The Bible may not specifically mention programming, graphic design, or engineering, but that doesn’t mean the Holy Spirit can’t teach you those things.
The problem is not that the Holy Spirit is unable to teach these things, it’s that we often don’t ask. And unless we ask, we cannot receive.
As James 4:2 says, You do not have, because you do not ask.
Why the Holy Spirit Teaches Us Secular Things
So why would the Holy Spirit teach you things beyond what is written in the Bible? The answer lies in fulfilling God’s Occupy Mandate.
When God made a covenant with Abraham, He promised him and his descendants all the land to the north, south, east, and west (Genesis 13:14-15).
This covenant wasn’t just about the land of Canaan; it was about God’s people influencing and ruling every sphere of human endeavor with His wisdom and righteousness.
Isaiah 2:2 says, It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it.
This speaks of God’s wisdom and authority being displayed through His people in every area of life.
Jesus reaffirmed this when He said, Occupy till I come (Luke 19:13 KJV). And God Himself declares, You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day(Deuteronomy 8:18 ESV).
The Covenant Connection
Through the blood of Jesus, we have become heirs of the covenant God made with Abraham and his descendants. As Galatians 3:29 says, And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
Therefore, it’s essential for us to manifest God’s wisdom in every area of life science, art, technology, business, government, education, and more.
God desires for His children to excel and influence all sectors of human life so His righteousness and wisdom can be revealed to the world.
How to Take Part in This Covenant
The key to accessing this wisdom and fulfilling God’s mandate is to abide in Christ. As Jesus said, Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me (John 15:4 ESV).
When you truly abide in Christ, He reveals your true identity whether you’re called to be an apostle, a teacher, an entrepreneur, or something else entirely. And from that place of identity, you can operate effectively in the role God has called you to.
So, ask God to teach you. Be open to the Holy Spirit’s guidance in both spiritual and secular matters. And most importantly, abide in Him.
Final Note
We also need to understand that there’s a distinction between having a ministry and doing the work of ministry.
Many people mistakenly believe that ministry is exclusive to the fivefold ministers apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers.
However, ministry is for everyone. The purpose of the fivefold ministries is to prepare and equip believers for their own work of ministry.
The word ministry in the original Greek is diakonia, which literally means serving or doing the will of God on the earth. It’s not limited to preaching or teaching; it encompasses anything God has called you to do.
Whether it’s building businesses, creating art, nurturing families, or bringing justice to society, if it aligns with God’s will, it is your ministry. The key is to find what God has ordained for you to do and pursue it wholeheartedly.
